Heart Failure is Not a Heart Attack

Heart Failure vs. Heart Attack

Being diagnosed with heart failure doesn't mean you've had a heart attack. Similarly, if you've had a heart attack, it doesn't necessarily mean that you have heart failure. These are two separate diagnoses.

  • Heart Failure - The heart has gotten progressively weaker over time and cannot pump enough blood to adequately supply the rest of the body.
  • Heart Attack - Refers to the sudden death of or damage to part of the heart muscle due to insufficient blood supply.

It's possible for a previous heart attack to have damaged your heart enough to contribute to heart failure, but a heart attack is an event whereas heart failure is a condition that progresses over time.
