Advanced-Stage Heart Failure Patients
Maintaining Quality of Life
One of the most important things for heart failure patients to do is stay active. Keep exercising, keep working and keep living as much as possible. Contrary to popular belief, recent research has shown that many activities are safe for most patients with heart failure. It's important that you find a physical activity that you enjoy, and do it often. Discuss your choice with your physician, but whether it is cleaning your own house, walking with your dog or chasing the grandkids around the yard, finding an activity that you can fit into your regular schedule will keep you motivated and will also give you a marker to measure how you are feeling. If you can walk for 10 minutes without feeling tired, and suddenly that tolerance drops to five minutes, you need to talk to your physician.
Follow your physician's orders and don't overdo it. But start doing activities such as walking or shopping, and resume hobbies such as gardening, swimming or fishing-whatever makes you smile. Activity can help you feel better, may decrease your symptoms and may improve your heart's function. By keeping active, you can enjoy life with friends, pets and family members.
Before starting any exercise program, be sure to consult with your physician.
